Let the World Smell Taiwan
A line of souvenir fragrances inspired by Taiwanese cuisine.
About Pi-Pang
Pi-Pang was a quirky line of Taiwanese fragrances that I worked on with a small team. This design concept was a limited release project that I helped to manage. Each fragrance was inspired by a popular Taiwanese dish: bubble milk tea, grilled sausage, braised pork rice, fried chicken cutlet, and even stinky tofu. The fragrances were aimed at international tourists; we marketed them as a fun souvenir idea for foodie tourists to take home from Taiwan.
My Role
As the team leader, I managed the project and the group meetings. I also liaised with manufacturers about our product requirements and handled most of the packaging design.
What does ‘Pi-Pang’ mean?
‘Pi-Pang’ is a Taiwanese word meaning ‘smell something good’. Because the fragrances are all inspired by different flavors from Taiwanese cuisine, the Pi-Pang team agreed that this name would be a great representation for our fragrance brand.
Logo idea
I worked on developing the logo with the team. The logo consists of Chinese characters that we elongated to imitate the way a fragrance wafts upwards.
Our target customers were international visitors to Taiwan, so we also included the pinyin below the characters, to make the pronunciation accessible to our non-Taiwanese customers.
Bento box packaging design
Bento boxes are a popular meal in provincial Taiwan. Because our fragrances were inspired by the local flavors of Taiwan, we decided that a bento box packaging design would be a playful choice.
